SPIRIT WEAR CAN BE ORDERED UP UNTIL MARCH 4 If you are interested in ordering Horizon Tennis gear, please use this link! https://denverathletic. Hello Parents and Student Athletes, Welcome to a new tennis season at Horizon. My name is Travis Crouch. I am the head coach for the girls tennis program at Horizon High School. I want to thank you for your interest. You can refer to the district web site for all information, as well as paperwork requirements at https://horizon-ar.rschooltoday.com/ On-lineRegistration is now open. You will also find the phone numbers for the Athletic Secretary, Braedi Tagart and the Athletic Director, Marty Tonjes there if you still have questions. Be Prepared! The first official day of practice will occur on Monday, Feb 26th and the last day for JV matches will be April 19th. Varsity will continue on into the first part of May. Practice times for tennis will not be the same as last season. This season they will be from 3:30-5:00. Completed paperwork for tennis must be turned in prior to our first official day of practice. Please have a current sports physical at the time of payment. Good shoes, comfortable athletic clothing and plenty of warm winter type clothing are a must. We will be out sitting for hours sometimes at matches. Personal water bottles are necessary for each and every practice and match. Snacks for practice or bus rides are encouraged. Meeting location for our practices will be on the tennis courts unless the weather forces an indoor workout. At that time I will get a REMIND message out as to where students should meet. Attendance at practice is expected for all athletes. Any unexcused absence will result in no participation in the next match. Advanced communication from the student athlete with the coaches will be the best way for students to not interrupt their play during the season. Students are expected to stay at matches until the last players are finished. When students leave early, players that are on the court do not feel supported. Eligibility Student Athletes are not eligible to participate in the following week’s matches if there are 2 F’s on the progress report. Keeping grades up during the school year is the top priority. There are 11 varsity spots available (3 singles and 4 doubles players). Challenge matches early in the season will help players to find the most appropriate spots on the varsity. Participants at the varsity level are expected to be at all practices unless there is an approved absence and this is communicated to the coach well in advance. Again, all varsity and JV students will play throughout the tennis season. This is a no-cut sport so all students should get play time in matches. JV often will play a quicker modified schedule to accommodate everyone. Lettering Policy Varsity players will letter. Often one JV player will letter as well if they play half of their matches at the varsity level by filling in for ineligible or absent varsity players throughout the season. They are known as “swing players”. Parent Communication-24 hour policy At Horizon, parents are asked to use the “24 hour policy” if emotions are running high. This means they are waiting a period of 24 hours before talking with a coach about a concern in order to have a more productive conversation. For many concerns that a parent may have there is no need for waiting 24 hours (for example: child is out sick, finding out information about a match, etc). We enjoy talking with parents and look forward to that this season as well. *Communication with all players will be done through an app called REMIND which requires a cell phone. If a student does not have a cell phone, parents or guardians can provide their cell phone for communication. Parents are welcome to be on Remind if they would like as well. Many parents do this so don’t hesitate to include yourself. It is really easy. Fundraising This year we will again be selling chocolate bars from the World’s Finest Chocolate. We had great success last season with this fundraiser with all players selling at least two boxes and some selling as many as 10 boxes! Donations are always welcome and very much appreciated!Parents & Community Members, This program is a self-funded program or club. Funds are raised through various fundraisers. CHSAA allows 12 contests and JV will play in the majority of these. After the last match on April 12th, JV’s season will be over. Varsity players will then participate in our conference or league championships. After the results from this tournament, we will be seeded into a regional tournament with a possibility of singles or doubles players qualifying to participate at the State tournament. The League Championship will be April 16th and possibly April 17th for Varsity Only depending on if players advance. Matches will be at Loveland High School.
